BLVR: Is anybody in your family a practicing Jew?
SS: My oldest sister, Susan, is a Rabbi. We grew up with no religion, but she just got into it on her own, and from the influence of her now-husband, Yosef Abramowitz, a journalist and super-Jew. He’s one of those super smart but super sloppy East Coast Jews with the yarmulke dangling by the tip of a bobby pin off the side of his head, Red Sox hat on top of that, one tail of his shirtfront in and one out, stains, a couple pens in the upper pockets. In other words: a-dorable.

Yes, it’s true. Sarah, in her talk/blessing to Aliza at her bat mitzvah two weeks ago, did use the word “vagina” in front of 300 of Aliza’s closest friends and relatives.

Deep in my past, I took on Boston University President John Silber on Free Speech and the failed policy of constructive engagement with apartheid South Africa. What Zinn doesn’t say in this excerpt–pulled from Google’s remarkable in-book search–is that he was the bridge between me and the Massachusetts Civil Liberties Union. The Free Speech precedent we set back then is still the law of the land, giving people free speech rights even in private institutions, using the state constitution rather than the U.S. one.

From an unlikely corner of the Jewish universe comes some environmental leadership. If I worked for the American Jewish Committee, I’d be eligible for a fat check for driving a very cool and Jewish values oriented hybrid Ford Explorer, which I’ve been leasing for two years. Our family calls it the “Chai-Brit”, meaning the Covenant of Life Car.
I’d like to see Israel be the first country in the world to mandate that its government cars, including for Ministers and Members fo Knesset, all have hybrids by 2007. I felt that the publisher of SocialAction.com should be driving a hybrid and now hopefully all CEOs of Jewish non-profits will do so.
Here’s the AJC release. Nice going, David Harris. Now how about monthly subsidies to AJC employees who send their kids to day school or Jewish summer camps?
American Jewish Committee Offers Employees Bonuses for Hybrid Cars
June 12, 2006 – New York – The American Jewish Committee is offering its employees across the United States an incentive to purchase or lease fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly vehicles. AJC’s Fuel-Efficient Vehicle Bonus Program is believed to be the first offer of its kind to employees of any non-profit organization in the U.S.
